2021.09.22 19:07 fjellogvidde My 6yr Malamute (dog) got this on his chest. I've shaved some of his fur to get a better look at it. When I touch it he starts itching. It doesn't smell. It seems like he's bothered with it, cause it seems like he have licked a lot (fur loss around that area). Anyone know what it could be?

2021.09.22 19:07 stochastic_boat [25/M] Anywhere - Looking for chill conversations
Hey, I'm 25 from the UK/Switzerland. I'm a maths PhD student, and in my free time I enjoy running, hiking, cooking, and reading mostly. I read all sorts of books, but lately I’ve been enjoying psychological thrillers, so very much open to suggestions!
I'm very chill and enjoy chatting about absolutely anything! I think there's so much to learn from talking to others, so tell me about your views, culture, fears, hopes, hobbies...anything you want!
As a conversation starter, tell me your favourite local dish and I’ll try to guess where you’re from!
I'm also open to voice chat if we connect

2021.09.22 19:07 Manwholikespie Best way to cool a waterblocked 3080 + 5950x in a Meshlicious?
Hi, a few weeks ago I got a 3080 from the newegg shuffle, later realizing it was a water blocked card. I figured it was a good time to do a new build, and wanted to try out sff after constantly transporting a 40lb glass behemoth.
I picked out the parts (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/P4Zzqp) and ordered them, but recent discussions with a friend have me concerned this machine will likely run too hot. I went with an EK CE 280 for my radiator, but this friend mentions he's used larger radiators for a similar loop and it was still overheating.
My question is: is there an air-cooled solution for my CPU (cryorig c7?) that, in combination with the water-cooling parts dedicated solely to the GPU, will be able to fit in this case + not require undervolting? Otherwise, is there some other solution that would do the trick? I considered an additional, external radiator but was unsure if that would make much of a difference (+ I worried about aesthetics). I also considered different cases such as https://www.sliger.com/products/cases/sv590/ which may be the next move if this doesn't work out...

2021.09.22 19:07 Revolutionary830 Reacting to the Finland vs. USSR debate
Some time ago I encountered a pretty smart argument from some rightist: “if socialism is so good, then why are Japan and Finland more prosperous than the Soviet Union?” I will answer this question in this post.
Despite the massive success of the Soviet Union (e.g. the fact that they were to pose a threat to the West in the first place in 1950, while suffering colossal losses only years before, and starting from very humble beginnings) which should never be disregarded, some reactionaries point to countries that were marginally more successful than the USSR and smugly say that socialism is inferior to capitalism. Disregarding the fact that socialism at least marginally improved the quality of life of its citizens every time it was tried, unlike capitalism, which fails to do so 9 times out of 10, and even then requires the exploitation, I will compare the successful examples of capitalism that were not first-wave industrializing countries (e.g. Britain, Germany) such as Japan and Finland with the USSR.
What may mess with my numbers is the fact that I, for metrics of development, generally refer to Russian numbers, and as you probably know, Russia =/= the whole Soviet Union. Refer to this post at your own risk.
You may have noticed that GDP is not included. Why? Because it is, in my opinion, one of the worst ways to measure “success”. Spain’s GDP now (near the end of 2021) is half that of the USSR in 1989, but you never hear that Spain will destroy Western civilization or something. In my opinion, industrial output is much more important.
Before the foundation of the Union, the people lived in abject poverty, especially by Western European and North American standards. More than a quarter of infants born would die, the agriculture was based on inefficient feudal-era farming and diseases were rampant. Health services in the early 20th century Russia was comparable to the health services of the mid-18th century Europe. The life expectancy was less than half of what we have now in most of the developed world. Furthermore, the horrors of serfdom were still present, in all but name.
Literacy. On average I would say that the literacy rate was maybe 10-20%.
Life expectancy. In the pre-WW1 years the life expectancy was barely higher than 30, during the war years it dropped to an abysmal 25.
Education quality: As you can see from the literacy rate, the education probably wasn’t that good, insofar it existed (understatements, man…).
Healthcare quality and quantity: More than a quarter of all infants born would die, so uhh…
Robert Allen, an economics professor, said this about the Industrial Revolution of Japan:
“The East Asian miracle has long-standing roots that involve cultural and political factors that are not easily replicated; it is much more than a few simple policies that are geographically transportable.”
Unlike pre-Soviet Russia, Japan was not a premodern economy in the broadest sense of the term; instead of having three-fourths or four-fifths of its population consist of peasants, only about half worked in the agricultural sector, and literacy was remarkably high. Furthermore, up to 10-12% of the population lived in urban centers, which is remarkably high in the 1700s. The Russian Empire only reached these numbers slightly before the inception of the 20th century. However, Japan did face widespread destruction in WW2.
If you think about it, Finland would be great to compare to Russia to have a 1:1 comparison of socialist vs capitalist industrialization. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Finland was not only more developed than Russia from its start, but it also did not face widespread destruction of its progress in the Second World War. Furthermore, the Civil War was not as destructive in Finland as it was in the rest of the ex-Russian Empire. We can thus answer the statement “USSR is less developed than Finland!” with an equally smug “No sh*t, Sherlock.”
Comparing Japan and the USSR
So let’s compare Japan with the Soviet Union, which would be worthwhile, because the Japanese also faced war damage at home. Japan did not develop a nuclear weapons or space program, so that is money that could be invested in its economy. Furthermore, the Japanese Army was as small as it gets, because the US Armed Forces were literally around the corner, while the USSR spent punishing amounts of money and brainpower on its military machine. Also, the worker productivity in Japan is much higher than that of the Soviet Union. Lastly, Japan received Marshall Aid, while the USSR received the opposite of this.
The life expectancy was 7 years higher in Japan than in the Soviet Union, but this can be attributed to cultural factors. The literacy rate is near-equal to that of the Soviet Union.
So yeah, we can attribute the fact that Japanese and Finnish lived a little better than the Soviets to these factors.
