(this is a monologue from my scratchpad, context is I'm making an RPG engine like thing, where the initial idea is to share stories and levels players made) I'm having a really hard time deciding. So I really want to hear some thoughts out. I'm sorry if i can't post it here, I'll remove it if it doesn't fit
...
I have a base RPG-like engine.
Alright, now it's time to decide the fate of the game. Let's first of all decide a constraint, this is an RPG.

  1. Shared user-made RPG stories (level sharing like in mario maker)
  2. User-made levels (no saves, level sharing like in mario maker)
  3. RPG with set plot
  4. Procedurally generated RPG?
  5. Multiplayer sandbox RPG
All of them have their advantages and disadvantages
  1. I'm alright with that, but that is very ambitious, because there are some implementation difficulties surrounding that, what if player wants to pause the game, and then continue it? Well we'll load a savestate, no big deal, but what if the game will be updated? Say, a savestate put a player into a room, but after the user-made game was updated and the room was removed, where does the player stand? The room where player was, was deleted. This is kinda tough...
  2. This is a simpler version of the idea №1, basically no saving is done and levels are short, possible to complete in a single sitting, however that would mostly eliminate the RPG nature of the game, which are usually long and interconnected, this is however fun and easy to implement, so it cuts the scope down.
  3. This is something that will take a while, although I really like writing stories, i'm not really good at them, not a big deal, because the bigger problem is that the replay-ability of the game will significantly hurt, we could go the Undertale way, adding littlest of details into the game, so many details players will find new ones for 20 following years... However making something like Undertale will require no less than 7 years of work, (which is the time it took to make Undertale), that wouldn't really work for me...
  4. This is a fun idea, but it gets out of hand really hastily, it's really hard to make a procedural RPG that doesn't get repetitive, fake, or outright bizarre/hilarious in a bad way. While this might cut down the development time and allow for (near) infinite replay-ability, this is certainly a really tough problem, not even the professional game studios get it right, and me? i'm just a guy who doesn't know any better.
  5. It's an alright idea, although multiplayer comes with a lot of it's drawbacks, it eventually pays off, as the emergent gameplay comes from the players themselves, as long as the players stay, the game will remain on it's legs... however multiplayer architecture is really hard to implement. Making it multiplayer however doesn't make it any better, because what's the base game? We say it's a sandbox, because sandbox games have high replay-ability factor, so sandbox is the base game. But what kind of sandbox? It could be a world building game, but this is kind of the area of uncertainty...
Let's eliminate I will remove number 3...
This also might be a recipe for an unsuccessful game, as there's a lot of story driven RPG's I can not possibly compete with, success of Undertale was substantiated by the core story inspiration and the sheer amount of skill put into the story telling by Toby Fox. I don't have such skill, and alas I don't have an inspiration for a story.
That means the game will be more or less set-system driven
I will remove number 4...
No way I will be doing that.
That means the game content will be more or less handcrafted
I will remove number 5
It's ambiguous for what the gameplay will actually be, sandbox is really vague, and I think it's better to just have an existing idea, and then possibly add multiplayer to it
That means multiplayer could be an extension to existing game
That leaves me with 1 and 2... It's a tough choice for sure.
It would be great if I can constrain 1, and there are few constraints i can impose, to make it possible to happen.
  1. Make save states incompatible across story versions.
  2. Make it hard or near impossible to update your stories, e.g. forcing the story makers to release the full story, this also might occur naturally if we use the constraint No. 1
  3. Go nuts and try to convert every savestate to a new version as possible with last resort being cherry-picking what to fix in savestate by the player.
The option No. 2 is a harsher solution of No. 1, really I assume more prominent stories will be more complete, however there's a place for bugfixes (which will inevitably happen even if the story is polished well enough).
Option 3 is difficult from my side as it is difficult from end players side. While good willed level creators will probably make bugfixes that are easy to migrate to the new save state, it will be problematic if they will make an unknowingly destructive change say the intended to rename a room, but instead removed it and made a new one with new name but same content inside (and problems like that). This leads me to decide on a middle-ground of these changes.
What will be good enough for a minimal viable product? I can put a harsh constraint, but not at cost of hurting player's and level creator's experience.
I really want to hear what will be the best as for the players & level creators, however I don't want to implement a highly-ambitious option too
